Default Possible 2x4-4x4 Linkage Issue?

Hey all!

I was out driving earlier, engaged 4x4 and my '84XJ drove fine. I put it back into 2x4, my 4x4 light went off and I started driving again... I noticed a sound- almost like my front pinion isn't disengaging far enough out of the ring gear causing it to bounce off the teeth... I can feel the bumps in the drive selection handle simultaneously with the noises. Is there a way to adjust this to where when I put the handle forward into 2x4, it pulls the pinion out of the ring gear farther????

I've been browsing around for awhile, but I haven't found any close problems to mine.

ANY help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!
