Default POR 15 vs. rattle can

whats better? got some surface rust on my driveshaft and frame. trying to figure out if i should spend the money for the POR 15 or just use the rustoeluem undercoating spray in the can . also has anyone ever just wire wheeled the rust and just apply the POR 15? do you have to go through the full steps ?

POR-15 is good stuff, worth the money and goes a LONG way.

I just restored my 70 GTO and I used it on the entire frame, under body, interior floors, nearly everywhere. I HIGHLY recomment it!!!

Knock off the scale rust with a wire brush and clean it with some simple green let dry and brush the POR15 on. They try to sale you on using their cleaner. I just has to be a cleaner that is not oil based . Simple green is what I used on the larger stuff that I didnt have sandblasted.

I say if you're going to do it, do it once and do it right, use the POR-15. I removed the carpet in my '98 Cherokee because it was leaking in water at the front windshield seals which contributed to a smell of wet dog. I pulled all the carpet and wire wheeled the light surface rust that I found then used the POR-15 chemicals along with the paint. Afterwards I bed lined the entire Jeep. The last time I looked it was good and rust free. As far as using all of POR-15's chemicals, I would do it just because they were meant to work together and it could affect the outcome. But if other people used simple green, then I guess thats fine too. If you don't have to to much to do then you could just buy their starter kit, as I recall it was $20 when I bought it.

I suggest using por 15. Thats the good stuff lol. However with that said, I wouldnt put it on my driveshaft. Brushing a thick coat of por15 on the driveshaft may throw it out of balance a bit and cause small vibrations. I suggest you spray a light coat of regular rustoleum or something on the driveshaft and use por15 on the unibody.

POR15 isnt thick, it looks thick in the can. Using a brush a little goes along way. I highly doubt you would put enough on it to throw it out of balance. If that were the case, any dirt build up on it throughout the life of the vehicle would throw it off balance.

The rustoeluem stuff has a terrible nozzle that will clog up within the first 10 seconds of use. I bought 4 cans, with the intent to use it on my jeep. All 4 clog up immediately. I highly recommend NOT using rustoeluem underbody spray cans.

POR 15 is great stuff and I've used on many cars. That being said I usualy keep cans of rustoeluem around and touchup the jeep every where I see surface rust ,cant hurt, but for the heavy stuff use POR 15.
