Popping sound

Popping sound
I was under my 98 Cherokee a while back and noticed that the drivers side axle has a boot on it but not the passenger side. And not I can hear and feel a clicking/ popping coming from the same side and think it's a cv joint going. I don't think it's stock either. Any ideas on what it could be?
