Default Police issue XJ?

Thought this was kinda neat. Wouldn't have much use for the cage inside (unless I got dogs or something)

2001 model w/ 4x4 and 4.0L for $5,478

More pics here: http://www.government-fleet-sales.co...spx?iid=301762

This a good deal?

Looks good. You could always open up a taxi service.... or remove the cage. Im surprised they left it in there.

They issue those to the mountain division here in Washington State. They are green though. The back seats look much more comfy then your standard cruiser, hahaha though I have never nor intend on ever being in the back seat.

Where the fog light switch usually is, there is a switch that says "EXT IDLE". Anybody know what that's for?

yup, it ups the idle speed on the jeep. I forget why they need it upped, but that's the deal.

Ever notice police cruisers idling when the cop is inside getting coffe/donuts/talking to an informant? Well that's what it is, it leaves the engine running so its ready to go kinda like a turbo timer.

uh.

no.

to leave the engine running you leave your keys in the ignition in the on position.

the only thing the extended idle switch does is idle up, resetting the idle speed at approx. 1500 rpm.

The idle switch is to save wear on the engine, as police cruisers tend to idle almost 85% of the time they are running. Most of the cruisers I work with run 24/7, they never even shut them off.

But beware with the police issue, they tend to come with a lot of problems. Had a crown vic once, the engine and trans were shot. The way they beat on them is rough, you can roughly double the mileage it has on it just from the wear. Think about it, they idle on the side of the highway for 4-5 hours, and then gun it up to 80-90, slam on the brakes, and then idle for another 4 or 5 hours.

There is a state trooper XJ down here in NC, I think it would be cool to have one but 5,000 is a little steep. Does it have some kind of interceptor package on it?

One advantage is you get 10" rear drum brakes.. I have to agree that's a lot of money for a car that does get more abuse by nature. A family member bought a police cruiser that had 80k miles on it but ran like it had nearly 200k on it..suspension was pretty well shot.

The idle switch is to make it idle with a higher rpm to keep the alternator pumping out juice for all the electronics. At least that's what it says on the website...
