my check engine light came on and i took to the mechanic shop to see what's causing it. the mechanic said it can be a lot of thing and he probably going to need to do a smoke detection test to find out where's the leaking coming from. he did looked under the jeep and said he saw some electrical tape was wrapping on the line that goes to the evap canister and think that might be the cause of it. im trying to save money from taking to the shop and see if i can do it myself. i found the teamcherokee.com web site and read on the leak detection pump can go bad and cause the check engine light to come on. anyone have this similar problem and does replacing the pump solve the engine light?

code can also be set from opening gas cap with vechicle running people haave said ,check all hoses to and from fuel tank to pump and on motor for leaks/cracks ect first

i never open the cap when the jeep is running. i have the locking cap that i bought from the dealer and i don't think that would tip off the engine light cuz they seal pretty good from what i was told. is there way i can check to see if the leak detection pump is working?
