Please Help (NEW XJ OWNER)
I have just bought a 1998 XJ 4x4 4.0L
The jeep has 256k ON IT!
I got it for $400 bucks and could sell it for six to another guy next week.
SHOULD I KEEP THIS AND DUMP MONEY INTO
SEEMS THE MOTORS NOT TOO BAD AND TRANNY SHIFTS
It needs
both wheel bearings
Steering stabilizer and shocks
sway bar bushings
Tires and a 4x4 alignment
front & rear brakes
EBRAKE
Rocker panels (THERE IS NONE LOL)
All new ball joints
exhaust after manifold to cat
exhaust tail pipe & hanger
cat converter
all new o2 sensors
ball joints
CODES P0141 & P0138 ON
may have cracked mainifold
I can get parts CHEAP but not that handy on fixing things
Please tell me your ideas?

I agree you would have a bunch of money in it before you could even drive it at all. Wish you were closer I would buy it for parts, its even the right color.

i know people are telling you to flip it, but fwiw i dont think it needs a 4wheel alignment, considering im under the impression the rear live axle stays aligned unless it is bent.
anyway, i would look for more rust, if the rockers are that bad there is probably more.
You might make more money selling it for parts, so keep that in mind too. Especially if you have a center console lid, a rear wiper arm, ect.

Well.... you've heard the voices of reason.... now here is the voice of insanity.
Do you have any urge to learn how to fix it up yourself? Take out having to pay someone else to do the work, and you'd still be dumping a ton of money in to it, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as bad as labor and shop fees.
If you have no urge to learn to do the repairs yourself, then take the money and run.
If you do want to learn, then you still might want to take the money and run... and put that $600 towards another Jeep, with less rust.
The rust is the biggie... I bought mine with no rockers, and a rotted floor, just to prove to myself that I could fix it... and so far, so good, but it was my own sick and twisted desire.
Since you even asked the question "Should I", I think you already know the right answer for yourself. If you really wanted to undertake the project, then you wouldn't even let the thought enter you head.

The OP states he is not very handy with wrenches. Learning on a basket case can be overwhelming and cost twice as much as planned. Flip it.

I also agree, depending how bad the wheel bearings are, id at least get my feet wet off-roading, not worrying about busting up my DD
then once you have your fun, you might know if you want another or not. Sell what's left of it.
Though you might get more if you find someone on CL to sell the good working drivetrain parts to, then scrap the rest. Especially if you have some goodies in there like a nice Diff.
