Angry Please help me fix my AC!!

I just moved to AZ from WA in my 1994 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 (4cylinder). On the way, my AC fan stopped working. I think it may either be a burned out blower motor, or a bad fuse. I would like to begin with the simplest problem by checking the fuse, but I have no fuse box diagram and I have no clue which one is for the blower fan for the AC/heat. This really sucks because I am in 100+ degree weather in a black jeep. Does anyone know where I can find a picture of the fuse box diagram online? I tried Autozone and even Google and couldn't find it. Please help me before my dog and I melt...

welcome to Tucson...been here all my life... I too have no AC and these jeeps are like hot boxes! For starters you can pull the fuses and see if any are blown, you will know when they are blown because the filament inside will be broken. Or stop by an Auto Zone and they can show you how to check the fuses for there is more ways than one.

Look on the passenger side kick panel for your fuse box for a fuse labeled "Blower." You could also just start pulling fuses until you find a burnt one, pulling one at a time. Here's all I could find:

Passenger side kick panel fuse breakdown for a 1996 XJ
01 - 25A Rear Wiper/Washer
02 - 15A Radio, Cigar Lighter
03 - Empty
04 - 15A Passing Light
05 - 30A Blower Motor
06 - 30A (Circuit Breaker) Power Windows
07 - 02A ABS
08 - 20A Turn Signal Flasher
09 - 10A Radio/Clock Memory, Courtesy Lights, Glove Box, Cargo, Dome Lights, Telltales
10 - Empty
11 - 25A Headlamp Delay Module, Horn
12 - Empty
13 - 20A Power Door Locks
14 - Empty
15 - 15A Instrument Panel Lamps, Clock/Radio and Memory, Headlamp Switch, Parking Lamps
16 - 30A (Circuit Breaker) Power Seats, Trailer Tow
17 - 7.5A Instrument Cluster Gauges, Headlamp Delay Module, Chime Module, Overhead Console
18 - 25A Rear Defrost
19 - 05A Instrument Panel Lamps, Radio Illumination
20 - 5.5A (Circuit Breaker) Windshield Wipers and Washers

Well, finally got around to checking my fuses and sure enough, fuse #5 was melted. Not just blown, but melted. I had to use pliers to yank it out of the fuse box. What causes this to happen? How can I prevent my replacement fuses from melting? Was the fuse simply old?

My 98 also has a "power distribution center" fuse box under the hood on the passenger side. It's usually for heavy duty loads. I'm not sure if the 96 has the same... but if you do, the fuse diagram is on the inside of the retangular lid.

Good-luck.

It was a 30 amp which is what is supposed to be in it. It is working fine for now and I have a few extras now. I just hope I don't need them.

Yeah my '94 (not '96, but pretty much the same anyway) has the "power distribution center" fuse box under the hood, and also has the diagram, but none of it controls the blower. alpine.adrenaline had it right with the list he provided above (Thanks for that alpine.adrenaline!). The fuse was located in the fuse block under the drivers side dash. I had to get a knife and scrape all the melted plastic out of the slot after I yanked the old fuse out (which was almost completely melted). I hope I won't be needing a new fuse block soon.

No problem, but I don't know if you're out of the woods yet. I hope that fuse doesn't blow again. As those blower motors get old they take more amperage to run and I've even heard of the climate control switch melting in the dash. I rerouted mine on my '87 to a larger gauge wire and 40 amp fuse, haven't had problems since. The next time you notice that fuse burning out check the wires leading to the blower motor, I bet they get hot.

Thanks again for your help alpine. Do you think the weather has anything to do with the fuse blowing? My Jeep is originally a WA vehicle, but the fuse blew as soon as I hit dryer and hotter weather. I think maybe the extra heat could have put more stress on the blower causing it to work extra hard? Just a theory. I have some extra fuses just in case and I will definitely check the wires in case my current fuse blows.

The weather shouldn't have anything to do with it. The fuse may have just been loose or the blower motor may be going. I sent you a PM with some helpful info...Tj
