Default Please Help Diagnose my XJ!

My 99 XJ (Stock) has been acting up a bit and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. problems are:

*When I turn on the ignition there is about a 3-7 second pause before the engine fires up.

*When started for the first time in the morning or after sitting for a few hours it makes what sounds like a grinding noise coming from the engine and the battery gauge stays at two notches under 14.
The noise lasts about 15-30 seconds then goes away and battery gauge slowly moves back to 14.

* High pitched squeaking noise(s) coming from the distributor cap area, which comes and goes but for the most part squeaks all the time now.

I recently replaced the water pump along with the idler pulley and new serp. Belt since there was a lot of squealing going on which has now stopped but then these new sounds started happening.

I would really appreciate any and all help you guys could offer in order to help me fix my sick Jeep.

When you replaced the belt did you check if everything spun freely? You may have one of the pulleys seized up, causing the sounds. The belt would be slipping, making the alt less effective and the volts drop.

Yes. I made sure to check out all the pulleys to make sure all were working fine and I didnt notice any to be rough or stiff. I had a pulley seize up on me last year so I know what what your referring to.

You say a 3-7 second pause "before it fires up". For clarity, do you mean 3-7 seconds before it even starts to crank, or it cranks for 3-7 seconds before it starts? That infowould be helpful.

Could the starter be sticking engaged or something like that?

Before it even cranks. I have to hold the ignition on for that amount of time before the engine begins to crank.

Sticking how? I replaced the starter last year so I never thought about that being the problem.
