Default Please Help!

Hello, I'm new to the forum so I hope this is correctly placed.

My problem is this; my 96 cherokee developed a leak in the radiator and after 110,000 miles decided that it would be a good time to replace it. While doing so I also took the time to replace the water pump, belt, hoses, thermo and the heater control valve (since it broke while removing the heater hose). All of this went rather smoothly but after topping off the with coolant and driving around the block the temperature hit the red! Whats going on! What could I have done!? Any help would be appreciated.

burp the system. to do this, remove the radiator cap, start the vehicle and watch as the water goes down, slowly fill it up with water/anti-freeze. i just eye ball and try to get a 50/50 mix. let the car run up to operation temp, around 190 and when the water stays at the edge of the cap then your good.
