I need some help.I have a 96 Cherokee Sport,Yesterday i was on my way to the store and after 10 mins of driving she started to act like she wont getting fuel,i give it a little gas and she bog down and i hear a poping sound but if i flored it she would go.Could it be the fuel filter.If youcut her offand let her sit for a min she will run fine for a few mins.

 

What you describe there keeps coming up. For a start if you get your codes read and post exactly what they say maybe someone here can help. I hear the auto parts will do it free.

Also take a good look at your wiring for any fault. (broken, chafing, grounding), especially the front 02 sensor, but also the wires to the rear one.

My 90 Renix Jeep is different, but I had exactly that when wires going down to my 02/knock & temp sensors....at least one, don't know which was grounding and causing it. You don't have a knock sensor and I believe your temp sensor moved, but check for grounding wires, (and the codes).

You can also try this;

1991-1995 are OBD-I (Chrysler)

1996-2001 are OBD-II (Chrysler)

The "Key Tricks"
Older (OBDI) models - Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock"). The "check engine" light will flash. Count the flashes. Each code is a two digit code, so a (for example) 23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (long pause). It will never flash more than 9 times, so watch for those pauses!

Newer (OBDII) models - Put the key into the ignition, push down the odometer reset button, then turn the key to RUN with your finger on the button - and then release the button. The odometer will go through 1111111 through 999999, then display the car's serial number. It will then show the error codes (it might show them starting with P). If this method does not work, try the OBDI method.

 

Is your CEL coming on? You have a 96 you have an external fuel filter. I would start by replacing that. If that does not work, it may be your fuel pump.

 

Renix will ignore (at least), the 02 sensor past 70 or 80* throttle. Can't say for the OBD's but it sounds like it's getting fuel. Easy enough to check the pressure anyway.....if you have the gauge.

 

I had the exact same issue. It turned out to be the front o2 sensor. Once i put in an "NTK"sensor it ran fine.
I still have a few other issues but that one is solved.

 

I only taped the grounding wires to my lower sensors that was causing that^. Someday I could unwrap it and see which sensor it was. It is a Renix though.

Btw with that "popping sound", I fired a mouse nest in the air cleaner out the front, drove through a little confetti. No sign of the mouse.

 

It was the fuel filter. I got the xj like 20 days ago. My 1st jeep and i love it.Thanks to all that helped me. Wife is mad after i got it i had to replace rear axle shaft,the manifold and fuel filter.

Does seem odd though that it would go floored if the filter wasn't allowing enough fuel through for it to run normal.

It sounds like being lean can cause that popping, and the 02 can make it lean enough to do it as well. Thanks for the info.
