Default Pinion bearing going bad?

I'm gettin a noise at about 40+ mpg. Sounds like coming from the rear and it sounds like a fire siren whine. Kinda like wah wah wah wah wah only when I'm on the gas. If I get off it goes away. I've heard bad ujoints and it doesnt sound like that. I will check them to make sure though. Anyway I can check the pinion shaft or bearing without ripping it all apart? I know replacing the bearing is a ***** so would it make sense to get a complete junkyard rear or just man up and do the job myself?
Any info would help. Thanks.

BTW it's a 94 country 4.0 5 spd
