I have the same engine. Start by removing that heavy stock fan and put in an electric fan that only comes on when your XJ gets hot. Add a free-flowing air intake to your throttle body and get a decent coil and distributor. Most of the power from one of these Renix engines can be harnessed by just getting it well tuned.

Also check out 4bangerjp.com, you might be able to find some helpful stuff there.

Swap it out for a Dodge 318 magnum small block.

That's all anyone ever says; swap it out for something else. Those 4 squirrels have done just fine in my bay.

...because they're not really worth putting serious money into. Either leave them stock or replace them.
I'm not going to give him advice to throw hundreds of dollars into an engine and get minimal power gains at best

There's not a lot of aftermarket stuff for the Renix 4 banger, cr8zxjguy. But if you tune it well, don't need to tow anything, and don't mind being a little slow from the stop light (or replacing your clutch every two years), it'll do great offroad and is a lot easier to work on than the cluttered bay of an inline 6. IMO. I like the $20.00 refuels too.

or a Dodge 318. You might as well considering that you have to swap the transmission along with the engine and all the electronics anyways.

thanks for the advice but i agree with alpine i dont want or need a small block v-ocho!!! plus thats a heck of a cost. money i really can use on something else like a little lift!!! its not like i need to get off and push!! just want a little more power. Its really great on gas for a 20 something year old suv!!! just like alpine said 20 dollar fill up! my 92 s10 4 banger 2wd gets wrose gas milage. i will try a electro fan they have one at summit for 150 bucks!! already did a complete tune up plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter. need to get new coil! made a good difference! so thanks alpine and nice to see your a fellow coloraden!!

yes, the 4 speed ax4 is a direct replacement for the 5 speed ax5, so long as you're swapping a 4x4 trans for 4x4 or 2x4 for 2x4...I have no idea why you would want to swap to a 4 speed, it would SUCK to drive if it's already got 4.10 gears from factory like it should.

neither of those trans can go behind a 4.0.
