Default Parts found in TC - Help!

New to the jeep world and recently bought a 2001 cherokee sport with 27K miles on it, really nice shape. While doing a fluid change on the 231 transfer case, a spring and bullet shaped thing came out with the old oil.
I also need to mention I have had trouble the TC popping out of 4w/hi and grinding until I go back to 2wd. My guess is the shift fork spring which keeps the 4wd in engaged. No metal in oil, drives ok in 2wd. So what should I do ?Can I drive safely in 2wd ? Take it to a Dealer ? Or pull the tc cover and see if I can find out where the parts go. Im pretty mechanical just no experience with jeeps. Why would the spring popped loose ? Very little use on it ?
How tuff to pull the tc cover in place ? Or do I drop the TC and do it on the bench ?

don't sound to good when parts come out with the oil i would drop it and do it on the bench to save money but if you have never open a case before i would take to a dealer or 4wd mechanic

they are easy to open and work on but you can drive in 2x4 with no trouble. the drive to the rear axle is straight through so nothing is missing form that part

The spring and denton pin are supposed to be behind the drain plug, just put them back in the way they came out.

They came out with the oil, I dont know how they go back in. Does this have anything to do with the TC poping out of 4wd/hi ?

Some elderly couple had it as a second vehicle, after they had a fender bender with it they parked it until he passed away then sold it.

They have nothing to do with it popping out of 4Hi, that might just be your linkage out of adjustment. The pin goes in flat side first, then the spring so the nipple is in the spring, then the drain plug.
