Sounds like the Flywheel to me. Is it making noise when it runs? BTW if its an automatic the trans is a AW4, the NP231 is the transfer case for the 4 wheel Dr...Tj

It's FlexPlate, not a flywheel. Yes there is a huge difference.

Cracked flrxplates are not uncommon.

I've got a spare that will work with your engine, $50 shipped.

No, you cannot install just any flexplate from any year 4.0L.

I want to say thats the torque converter that sits just before the tranny in the bell housing. The plate you talk of is a 1/3 plate that covers the part of the tranny/torque converter thats not covered by the engine.

If its vibrating, try tightening the bolts that hold the plate in place.

This is not an AW4, just an image to show what I mean. You will not have the "Bell Housing Brace" But the rest is close to what you have.

No, you're incorrect. The torque converter is bolted to the back side of the flexplate and is not visible by removing the inspection cover.
Engine-->Flexplate-->Torque Converter-->Transmission-->Transfercase.

So the giant gear thing behind the plate is the flex plate?

I call that an excess panel. But whatever you call it its not that big of a deal untill you wheel it a lot of older GMs don't even have one (cars). Any way you can take it off untill you have cash for a new one or just leave it be. Junk yards will have them or order one from whoever that was that had a few spars. I just wanted to say its not a big deal.

Nope, flywheel. Thats where your starter makes contact and turn the motor over.

If you go without one and get crap and rocks jammed in there it will be a big deal. IMO

See you learn something new everyday...

When I got my new XJ, that panel was missing. Just grabbed the one off my other parts XJ.

No, you are wrong. Manual transmissions have a flywheel, automatic trannys have a flexplate.

Apples and oranges.

That's the inspection cover, and the flex-plate is behind that.

That's just the inspection cover. $5 at the junkyard.
