I had some soft 8's that I painted gunmetal gray a few years ago. I used the rim paint from Advance Auto and it turn out pretty good. I sanded the wheels to scuff the surface and used three coats of paint. In the two years I had them like this I had no chipping or flaking and I barely even scratched or dinged them on and off road.
I had some nasty rusty chrome wheels on a Toyota truck. Knocked some of the flaking chrome off, scuffed up and painted with some black Krylon that was on my shelf and cleared over the top. Looked good and seemed to hold up okay.
There is specific wheel paint you will find at the store if you want to do it right. Giver er a shot!

I have painted all of my wheels. all you need to do is take some sand paper to scuff them up some so the primer will stick... Go to your local Advanced or Napa and get some sandable primer if you want it to look good. Prime 1 coat sand... 2 prime sand 3 prime leave and let it dry real good. Then pick out what color you want.... I picked the duplicolor metalic black.. Spray one coat and sand with a light weight sandpaper if needed. then go over with one or two more coats or as many as it takes to get a good look... I even went over mine with a metalic clear coat for extra shine....
the key is to scuff and prime first or the paint will chip.

i kid at my school painted his rims like thoes to match his body color... they look really nice from a distance but up close they look really bad cause he used a brush to paint them and drew on designs with a sharpie. wat an idiot. lol ill try to get pictures of it tomorrow
