Painting Rims
So as you cant tell from the picture much, these rims are peeling a bit, pretty rough looking and beat up. So I decided I am going to repaint them. First off, which is the best method to go about painting them, sand, 2 or 3 coats of rim paint, then a coat of clear? Also, which colors do you think would look good on these rims on my black/silver jeep? I was thinking a gunmetal, or even a black. What do you think?

you have it right, I suggest using Duplicolor wheel paint, that way you dont really need a clear coat.. thats what ive use on every wheel I paint, and well Ive painted mine, (xj and cobalt), friends mustang, friends Lancer, friends Aerio, and a friends mazda 3

I think that those wheels painted in black, if you cleaned up and taped off the lip and left it brushed aluminum, would look NICE with the XJ's paint. I used Rustoleum Rust Tough paint whe I painted mine and it has held up great, very tough stuff. I did a writeup for how I did mine:

But I think your process may be a bit different for your wheels. Just make sure you take plenty of time on the cleaning/sanding/prep part and whatever coat you choose will have a much better surface to bond to.

I used two different paint scrapers that were drill attachments and they cleaned out all but the very tightest of spots and then I used a rust converter primer from Rustoleum. After that cured, I painted with Rustoleum's Hammered black paint, which has a bit of texture to it. I doesn't come out black, but a really cool charcoal gray. I totally love it and it is durable. I'll try to find pics, but I definitely recommend it. There is also a how-to in the tech articles I believe.

K thanks guys. Ill post pics when im finished if i get around to it soon. Does anyone by chance have any pics of these ugly diamond spoke rims that i have painted gunmetal or black? Im curious to see what black looks like, Im leaning towards gunmetal cause i think black would look kinda wierd on the diamond spoke.

I usually just sand them with like 100 grid to scuff it up.
Clean them with some simple green.
Dry very well.
do 2 coats with any dupli color wheel coating paint.
let them dry for about 15 to 20 minutes.
clear coat them about 5 or 6 times every 5 to 10 minutes.
let them chill for about an hour.
Throw them on and enjoy.
I think the graphite color that dupli color makes would look really nice

They look pretty good! A trick i have found when painting them with tires still on, is get a deck of playing cars and stick the between the wheel and tire to protect the tire from being painted.
