X2, clearcoat is tricky and can look real bad real quick

Stick with flat black you will be much happier

I painted mine on the Jeep. However, I have an 87. It wasn't too hard though. Just masked off the body with tape and newspaper.

I believe krylon makes a paint for plastics that does not require prime/sanding.

Go over it anyway with laquer thinner or acetone. Armorall leaves a residue that will ruin your paint...and it never, ever, ever, ever, ever goes away.

For that matter, all those shiney-it-up products leave residue that persists like the half-life of plutonium. The only solution is solvent.

acetone? oh yeah it will. I don't know if I'd use anything but rubbing alcohol on the plastic bumper guards/caps. I used rubbing alcohol and the paint on the plastic guards came out great, no fish eyeing or anything. And I used to armor all my bumper guards all the time.

I used the Rustoleum truck bed coating on mine when I still had them. Stuff works great and looks even better. I would definitely recommend it.

If they are just faded, try a heat gun on them first. it may surprise you how much color can be restored.
