Default painting the plastic

I want to repaint the plastic bumper caps on my cherokee, but should I pull them off or just tape and spray on the jeep? How hard is it to take the plastic caps off?

Caps are easy unbolt and take off side trim on the other hand is a pain. I would pull caps off and tape side trim. Make sure you well prep you plastic and use the spray paint that bonds to plastic

How do I prep? Do you mean just prime them, or sand them and such?

go to your local carquest, napa, autozone what have you most have a body section get a little bottle of body prep..prep-sol is a general term for it i think your bumpers are textured so just get a grey scuff pad then get a can of plastic promoter and personally i like SEM products for rattle cans (carquest stocks) but duplicolor is fine get TRIM BLACK will give you a stock appearance....

I'd recommend taking off the caps and taping off the side trim.

On an '01 the caps are not textured. here's what I did for mine 2 years ago - prep them would be to use some fine grit sandpaper, something rougher than wet/dry though. Use some brake cleaner to clean them off and then use a can of "Trim Black" to paint them. Do 2 coats, allowing proper drying time in between coats. It'll turn out VERY well and your caps/trim will look brand new.

Like I said, I did this 2 years ago and they still look like I just did it.

i just brushed them up a little bit with a wire brush then sprayed them with rustoleum universal hammered black from home depot. i think they came out great...did my wheels with it too. i peeled my side trim off for good though so i didnt paint them. i can post a pic later if you want my profile pics were before i painted them

I wouldn't clear coat them. There's no reason for it and it's honestly a waste of money and time to do it to the caps and trim. The only reason for clear coat is to protect the paint. The "Trim Black" spray is designed to take hits from rocks and other road debris and not chip or flake.
