Default Painting over chrome

Does anyone know the procedure for painting over chrome? I have a set of chrome wheels that I want to paint. Does the chrome have to be stripped off or can I just sand it/scuff it and prime and paint? Thanks for any advice.

From what I understand, it's all in the prep work!! I think you have to get the crome off to properly paint it. I'm not sure on that, and I'm kinda curious if this is correct information that I have, or if I've been told wrong. I have some chrome trim I'd like to paint over myself!!

One guy told me that the chrome had to be stripped or blasted off. Then I read somewhere that a guy just scuffed up his chrome wheels and primed and painted them.
I only wanna do it once so i need to know the right way.

why dont you try sanding priming and painting, and if that doesnt work just blast off the paint and chrome then paint it like that?

Because I've tried it. I have the Waggy, which is chromed throughout. I'm not a fan of it, so I wanted it gone. Sanded and prepped and painted, to watch the paint flake off in a few months....fun!!

Old school trick for stripping chrome is..... Lightly sand to break surface, than coat with a thick coat of "Easy-Off" oven cleaner. Let stand for about 20-25 min. clean off with very hot water. Lightly sand and repeat. Now get some good high quality "etching" primer and a good paint, along with some clear coat. This should work on most anything with chrome on it. Works very well on chrome plated plastic also.

I've used this in cleaning the chrome off of Ford Ranger bumpers.
