ok guys, the first thing I want to do after I get my XJ back, is to repaint it, I dont like the forest green color, I want like a camo green or a flat mate green, but light, well anyways till I find the color I want, I have a q.

I know some of you guys have painted yourself ther xjs, any tips? do I need to sand, or any pre painting stuff? also how much did you pay for the paint, normaly per can?

 

You want to scuff up any existing clearcoat/paint that's there and get rid of all rust and use a good primer on the bare metal. Rattlecans generally cost around $4-$5 here for Rustoleum.
Here's my rattlecan green, I used Rustoleum Camoflauge Series, Forest Green:

It's all holding up well except where there was rust before, I didn't use a good enough primer and it's coming back through.

 

it does not have any rust, but the hood is real bad, on paint,, the rest of the body is good

 

I'd sand the hood down so it's all even. I assume you're talking about the clearcoat peeling and oxidizing and stuff.

 

Ya know I am seriously considering repainting mine..Question did you pull the door panels off and ban the doors and jams and so forth as well?

 

yep,, do I need to sand it to the bear metal?

Here's my buddy's OD green job:



It took him 6 cans, and that includes the door jambs. He just roughed it up with sandpaper to get a good surface for the paint to adhere to, and went to town.

 

Yeah one day I either want to do OD green...Good camo for when I go hunting..

Rustoleum ultra flat tan.

 

One coat? only 6 cans? I always thought it would take more than that. I considered painting my TJ OD green from yellow but didn't know what i was getting into using pain cans. Looks simple enough...

 

yeah just rough it up and make sure to get through the clear coat. i like the saying "do it right the first time or dont do it at all". take your time and remember to not lay it on to thick and do multiple coats. id recomend a little wet sanding between coats and clear coating it all but clear coat can get expensive.

here's how i did my rims:

-sand with metal paint removing sanding block
-spray surface with hose to remove crap
-dry off surface as good as you can
-1st light coat of primer, let it dry
-use some medium grit sand paper and sand it lightly
-wipe off crap with dry cloth, another coat of primer, let it dry
-use some fine sand paper and sand lightly
-wipe off crap with dry cloth, 1st light coat of paint
-sand a little bit with fine sand paper
-wipe off crap with dry cloth, 2nd coat of paint
-sand a little with fine sand paper
-wipe off crap with dry cloth, 3rd coat of paint
-4th coat if needed and let it dry
-then clearcoat.

thats how i would do it.
