Paint?
My 1990 2d XJ's clear coat looks horrid just on the roof and hood.Call me vain but splotchy red looks horrible. Anyone have advise on repainting both on a budget. I thought about doing black or grey?

Yes, it can be done cheaply.
I rattle canned my entire truck with spray paint from Walmart. Cost me less than $50, and its been on there about two years. No flaking or chipping.
It doesn't look the best, but I'm not a painter, and I didn't exactly take my time to do it either.

Everything is in my build thread.
I used a disc on an angle grinder to sand the clear off. But I did it in a hurry.
Prep work is very important to have a successful paint job.

If you have an spray gun do like I did on my 90 XJ with grey metallic flaking clear coat. I scuffed the paint with a scoth brite and used concrete floor clear coat applied in thin layers.
Real hard coating as it is used for floors so it will work well on Jeeps also. Maybe not show quality paint but I use my Jeeps and they all get scratches and dings so to me it is cheaper to use that and easy to repaint.
For painting the whole Jeep I use common outdoor metal paint with the same clear coat. Usualy lasts about 3-4 years in Swedish salt on the road in wintertime condition.

I did my entire jeep in spraypaint. I made an instructable on it. Check it out. Paint has been on there for awhile now and still holding up just fine except where Ive beat on it on the trails.
