Pulled this code the other day. I haven't had a shop check it out yet since my pocket scanner can't read the tcm. Just wanted to get some ideas before.

Stock 99 xj 4.0 auto. Sometimes doesn't shift into od. If I shut it off and restart it driving down the road it will be fine and shift into od after. Then other times I'm getting some bad vibes.

From the service manual.

The P-codes, P1698-” No CCD messages from
TCM” and P0700 “Transmission Fault
Present” are Powertrain Symptoms (PCM
codes) and are diagnosed under the powertrain
diagnostic symptoms group.

I understand the code just was wanting some input as to what might be wrong.

Whenever you get a P07XX code your first step should be to do a thorough cleaning of the NSS. The Range Select Signal goes through the NSS and dirty contacts will cause an error code in the PCM.

I had Issues with it already and cleaned it this winter. The backup lights don't always come on so maybe just change it?

You mat want to try to adjust it before you change it out. That's just me.

Usually, if you loosen it, it will move a little.

Won't shift to Overdrive (4th gear), or won't lock the Torque Converter Clutch?
If it's the latter you might check the brake pedal switch too.

Go to an auto parts store, like Advance, O'reilly, etc., and have the codes read. "Ideas" will come after you get all your codes and post the numbers here.

The '99 TCM and the PCM share the PCI Transmit function at pin cavity 7 on the DLC.

They said they couldn't pull those codes...they just use a pocket scanner.
