Because whoever had this jeep before me did not use oil with zddp in it (which used to be in most oils, but is no longer in most oils, and our flat tappets need it), and therefore some lifters started failing. This is a flat tappet cam, not a roller cam, therefore tappets are worn to match the cam. No point in replacing lifters and not the cam. Also, that cam is slightly over stock... not by much, but slightly. JP magazine reported 10 more hp and 20 more ft lbs of torque with it on a stock 89. It is higher lift and better lobe seperation. I wouldn't go with a higher duration cam because it's a jeep, I need low end torque, not high rpm horsepower.
FYI - Valvoline VR1 has the ZDDP that our tappets need. Some people say it's not necessary, but me personally, I'll go with the cam manufacturers recommendation and use oil with zddp. Better safe than sorry.
