WOW! This turned into one confusing thread. After reading thru it 3 times, I say we bottom line it.. I say replace the clutch on the fan (whether it has one or not)

Yep, I think it was suggested back in post #2 to replace the fan clutch and it went down hill from there.

Haha sorry guys. This is an issue I haven't ran into before, hence all the questions. I always turn to forums for advice and it is a really good way to learn new things, especially with good feedback from folks like yourselves. I'm going to replace the fan clutch this week and report back with the results. Many thanks to all!!!

ok so i bought a new fan clutch but before i put it on i wanted to do a couple more tests because everything i've been reading online is just too much. some say this, some say that...... any way i started the jeep (it's around 50degrees here) and took a length of water hose and pressed it to the fan blade to see if it would stop the fan. it would not, so it seems the fan clutch is engaged even when the engine is cold. this is not normal, correct? so my logic is telling me that if the fan is always engaged and not slipping, the engine should not overheat. also when the temp did start to rise above normal, i kicked the engine up about 300 to 400 rpms and the temp starts to drop. i'm starting to think something else is the problem. (along with a stuck fan clutch.) any thoughts?

thanks

Who gave you the idea to stick something in a moving fan?

Apparently it's an old trick. Besides I didn't just jam it in there.

U need to be really careful about trying stuff u read on the Internet.....never stick anything into any spinning fan. Stick $250 into buying all new cooling system components (including a new rad)......the overheat guessing will end along with this thread.

The fan is always running at max potential yet the engine overheats until I raise the rpm's for a bit.

How do u know it's running at max potential?.....it's just spinning. They always spin when the motor is running but that doesn't mean performing at max potential. The fan clutch is just one of 4 major cooling system components (echo)......the overheat could be something else or a combo of things.

It's. Not. Slipping. Therefore it is spinning at idle speed. Even when cool. Without beating around the damn bush I'm basically asking if it sounds like a water pump problem since increasing rpm's in neutral lowers the temp.

you stated eariler the fan was easy to spin when the motor was hot ,when your raising the idle your simulating driving down the road aka puling more air its a 2001 the fan clutch is 11 years old replace it anyways..........

Plus I don't have 250 to spend on it. Oh poor me wah wah I know. If you're going to only half read my posts please don't even bother to comment. I already mention it has a new rad and thermostat.

The fan will always spin. I don't think it has enough "slip" to stop with a garden hose or whatever it was you stuffed in there.
