Overheating: engine died, smoke from engine, no heat, dirty coolant

Thanks for your help so far guys. One thing I notice is my temps seem inconsistent. Today on my drive it stayed low the whole time, way less than 210, I'd say 190ish or less. Any chance this is air in the radiator? Does it auto burp or do I have to do something to get it out?

Well the air doesn't get trapped in the radiator, rather in the cooling system in the engine itself. Usually just let it idle with the radiator cap off till it's warm enough to open the thermostat. Rev it a few times(it's gonna spew), that'll usually clear it up. Top it off, good to go.

There's really no reliable test for the fan clutch, and they aren't expensive so most of us recommend just replacing it.
The e-fan is only supposed to come on at 218, or (*I think*) when the AC is running.
It's been so long since I've had working AC that I can't remember for sure about that!
