hello everybody. now my jeep (94 cherokee sport 4.0) has had this problem for a while. the electric cooling fan does not kick on when it should. therefore the jeep overheats unless it is driven above 40mph. if you sit and idle it will overheat due to the lack of airflow. is there a certain thing on jeeps that breaks or wears out overtime? i know we had the fan hooked up to a switch inside the cabin to operate it manually when we saw it needed to come on but we took that out after we thought we fixed it. but it still doesnt work

has anyone else had this problem and did you come up with any remedies? i thought maybe just putting some vents in the hood of the jeep right above the headers and spots that would encourage airflow. but idk. i would rather have the fan working like it should.

 

my '95 does the same thing... i tried replacing the the relay for the aux. fan in the PDC but it still didnt fix it. so i have just been using the switch i wired in like you mentioned. try the relay though, it may work for you. the relay is cheap and couldnt hurt to try.

 

Your fan clutch may be in need of replacement. XJs without AC didn't have the electric fan.

As for your E-fan, it should come on when triggered by the sensor on or near the theromostat housing. IIRC, 217*F is the number often mentioned.

Maybe you're in need of a cooling system flush, or the thermostat isn't opening far enough for good flow.

 

my dad thinks its somewhere in the wiring. he replaced the relay i think. and he also got a new thermostat too. but im not sure. he is stumped with it but winter is rolling around soon so it shouldnt be a problem for too long. until next summer....

 

I'm having the same issue with an 87, so far I replaced the relay/ fan/ coolant sensor with no results. I can't seem to find an actual fuse for the E-fan itself but I think the AC fuse is in some way attached, (the 20amp one in under the steering column). Probably get out there tonight and check that.

It's a little mystifying because there shouldn't be that much to this, I get nothing with the AC on or with the coolant sensor unplugged. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

 

What the other poster said, you probably need a fan clutch. The electric fan is really only for if you have the ac on, OR if you clutch fan isent doing the job the e fan will kick on.

 

the electric fan doesnt come on unless the A/C is going, or if its already overheating (230-240 or so) if you hook a switch up to it you can have it come on maunally

 

Where is the fan relay and the radiator fan sensor located on a 89 Cherokee 4.0 liter with electric fan?

 

^^ not sure (dont know if its different than a 95), but check under the fuse panel that under the hood. the lid should tell you what all of them are

 

Check the fuse. There is a blue fuse under the hood that operates the electric fan. I keep blowing my fuse for some reason, I'm now on my 4th. So when the fuse dies I have no electric fan. I dunno about a relay ...

 

Actually, the ECU turns the efan on at 218F coolant temp and/or when a/c compressor is on, except for '00/'01 which are coolant temp activated only.

on the 93 xj i had, before i pulled the motor, it seemed like it was A LOT higher than 218 on the temp gauge. it almost got to the red on the gauge before it would kick in. and i know on my 95 i have gotten it past 218 a few times and the fan never kicked on but those could just be problem i have

 

Y is almost everyone ignoring the clutch fan issue. IF the clutch fan goes out completely, he is gonna have problems, fix the main problem, then worry about fixing the E-Fan. As said b4, the E-fan is for ac only OR a back up for the clutch fan. It is not ment to provide full engine cooling on its own.
