That sounds normal. Your electric cooling fan will cut in around 219 degrees or so I think.

You might want to check your fan clutch, just in case. But they don't go bad all that often.

Once the thermostat is open, whether it is 180°F or 195°F, the only thing limiting the temperature of the coolant is the efficiency of your radiator.

A lower temp thermostat only lets the coolant flow through sooner. Period.

Well it worries me since right now it's only about 80* lately. Soon it'll be 120 or so.

I wished I had a nickel for every post I've made on this forum alone regarding the sole function of the t-stat, so hear goes again......a properly functioning t-stat does one thing and one thing only.......and that is determine MINIMUM coolant temp. All of the other cooling system components, their condition and driving conditions determine maximum coolant temp.

Wonder why those Honda 3.5L V6 and Toyota 3.5L V6 motors leave the factory with 170 and 180 t-stats respectively. I know this because I have one of each. Crazy engineers......they should know 170-180 stats spell nothing but doom and gloom....they should know better.

Still waiting on some solid factual info saying that a 195 gives better performance than a 180. We all have opinions, some good data to support the opinion would be refreshing. Like I said, I may need to change my thinking......but not just based on someones opinion/statement. Again, the 180 Stant SuperStat in our XJ makes for a heater that will make u sweat and good engine performance as well.

The dealership parts book listed the 180 stat as extreme duty/service or something to that effect. And yes, a lower temp stat opens sooner, allowing coolant flow to start sooner than a higher temp stat and depending on the condition of the rest of the cooling system AND driving conditions, a lower temp stat MAY give lower coolant temps than a higher temp stat. Great Obama impersonation, by the way.

If you have a Thermostat you like. You can keep that thermostat. Period.

I consider mine heavy duty. If you really hit trails hard I would consider that heavy duty.
