Default Overhead console compass trouble.

I installed an overhead console over the weekend. Its a pre 97 console so I had to swap connectors to plug it into my 00. Everything is working great except for the compass. The compass is only reading N, NW and W. I tried driving in circles for about 6 times to calibrate it but it still does the same. The directions displayed seem to come on at the correct time just never see any E or S variations, it calls out NW for everything else.

Is the compass part of the console or in the jeep already?

Part of the console in the overhead gizmo box. Did you follow the whole cal procedures and set your magnetic offset?

All i know of to calibrate it is to drive in circle a few times which I did but nothing changed. I did play with the offset thing and it moves it but still doesnt give me and S or E variations. Is there a calibration procedure beyond driving in circles for a bit?

You have to put it in calibration mode. You do that by holding both the step and us/metric buttons down for about 10 seconds until you see VAR. Select your variance

After that press step and it should say CAL. THAT is when you drive in circles. Make sure you aren't near any large metal vehicles, buildings, etc. If it is working it should take 2 or 3 times to calibrate.

Razor thank you sir! I have not tried that so I will try that when I get home. Does it matter which direction the circles are in?

You and engineer? I remember writing the program stuff you got in your sig in school.

I think you need to go counter clockwise... but I can't remember for sure.

I did some programing with visual basic in college. If the XJ was written as a computer program I bet that sub routine would be in there somewhere

My '92 doesn't have a "step" button. Do you hold the on/off button and the US/Metric instead?
