That's the model used in 1993-1996 XJ. They where also used in other vehicles, like town & county van, Fifth ave, Dynasty, at the time. I myself would sell it on E-bay (they go for about $80, on up) And then use the money to get the 2001 model. Because the '01 should be a direct plug in. And the wire harness is probably hiding under your headliner. (except the temp sending unit, You might need one) Or Put it up in the "for sell" section here. But you might get more for it on E_bay. A lot of people are looking for those. And are hard to come buy. The OEM Mopar dealers price, for new replacement comp/temp module in it. List for $695 for my '91. I bought one off e-bay for $80 (after a year of looking), and swapped the dead module out of mine...................JMO!

Not worth it in your 2001. Sure you could make it fit somehow, but it won't mount as it should and also doesn't follow the contours of your roof either.
These older ones aren't as valued, $80 and up is quite a long shot. The 97-01 that you should look for, on the other hand, can get pretty expensive.

Wow, reading this makes me feel like I got a great deal. I got an overhead console from another '99 for $100 shipped. Had it put in about 2 weeks ago, and I love it!
Just a note: The console was re-covered in dark grey cloth to match the headliner which I had redone in dark grey.

so it sounds like its more effort than its worth to try and make this one fit?? also how tough would it be to just get the lights to work? i'm thinking of possibly trying to make it fit and use the lights and the rest as storage for small things. thanks.

As far as the lights go, i believe its the yellow wire that needs to get hooked up to a constant 12v source. The black wire needs to get grounded out, and the tan wire probably goes to a sensor for when your door(s) are open. If you just hooked up the power and ground you should have functioning lights. With a little more effort you could tap into a sensor wire so they would come on as dome lights when a door is open.

Sure you could make the lights work... but you either missed part of my post, or just don't really care what it looks like.
The roof contours are different, so the consoles are built differently to fit. Also, the 97+ is designed to fit where your current sun visor clips screw in.. while the older ones just have 1 screw in the middle of the console IIRC.
If you don't care about the compass, temp, mpg, etc... you can find the same style 97-01's in some Chrysler or Dodge mini vans. It will fit as it should and you will be able to wire the lights. However these aren't "big ticket" items so they may be easier to find at JYs, and also cheaper if you look around online.

i read it i guess i just didnt realize how different they were..... i just got a chance to hold it up a few mins ago. it now makes more sense..... thank you.
i'm not too concerned about the mpg cause i can just check when i fill up my gas tank anyways and besides i'm not driving it for the "good" mpg we get in them. compass and temp would be nice but i'm not exactly sure that i want to spend that much money to get one with that info in it.

Here's the model you need; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-01...item4cefda7c4d Sell yours, and get the one that belongs there (2001). This is the only one listed right now. But if you keep watching eventually you'll see more, I told you they are hard to come by.
