Overhead Console
Hello,
I'm new to these forums, and am looking for a little help. I have an 01 Cherokee Sport, and am looking to purchase an Overhead Console (that neat little temp/direction and glasses holder) and install it. I have the console lined up for purchase, but have yet to pull the trigger because I'm not sure if this is a feasible part to install, and not sure of how much work it would be.
Anyone with any experience, knowledge, or info that would share it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I just put one in my 97... just make sure you have the ceiling bracket and the wiring harness that go with it... the console will not be much good without those.
I'm getting ready to re do my head liner... I'll get some pics when I do it.

The headliner and backer board must be cut to just about the same dimensions and shape as the upper console to mount it.
Referring to the previous post: you may have to partially take out your headliner in order to make sure the bracket and wiring are in your Jeep.
Check it before you buy.

Well, you would have to cut a hole in the head liner. I would scare me enough to back off...
You would als have to be certain that there is wiring up there for it to plug into... I honestly didnt know over head consoles were offered in the Cherokee so I cant say which years have them or which ones may be wired for them.

KBo650 - I did the same to my 2001 Cherokee, adding an overhead console that is. Some things you need to know: from my research, you need an overhead console and harness from a '00 or '01 (maybe a '99 is ok too). I guess it has something to do with a different computer setup or something. Be sure you have the harness that went with the console - different plug-ins, very important. Get the bracket as well, if not, you can get it from www.jeepsareus.com (I had to do this).
You'll remove your visors to access underneath the headliner (hope you have skinny hands). The A pillar on the passenger side will need to be removed, as well as the dash box and passenger kick panel. Basically, fit the harness where your current one is. You'll find the additional plug(s) behind the glove box. Might take some foolin' around, but you'll find it. 2 cuts will need to be made in your headliner, 1 where the bracket mounts to the roof, and the 2nd where the back of the console "slides" up and into the headliner. When you mount the bracket into the roof, be sure to use SMALL sheet metal screws. Plug everything in, slide the tail of the harness through your cut, push the console onto the bracket and use your visor screws at the front to mount. Then it's installed and the computer will set everything automatically... with a few exceptions:
1) You need to install an ambient temperature sensor (this is how you get your temperature readings). Dealership can get it, think it was a $20 part and it installs on the radiator brace (I just had the dealership install). Harness is already there for it.
2) Your remote entry works off your harness you removed (somehow), so you'll need to have your remote entry system reprogrammed at the dealership.
Overall, not too bad to install. Just takes time and feeding/tracing some wires. Be sure you have an eye for detail and mark before you cut into that headliner!

I got mine on Ebay. You can get the whole setup on www.jeepsareus.com, but you'll pay a lot more, it's OEM.
