I hope u don't come up short on cooling......did u read the link in post #29? Do an update, post pics/tricks/etc. on your install, for us. I'm curious how 16" fans will mount up to an 11" rad.....gonna take some southern engineering. LOL

I think u can probably mount them......that old saying, where there's a will, there's a way. My concern is, their CFM rating.....the 2 of them together will be well short of the factory OE fan set-up CFM performance. Since the factory cooling system (mainly the radiator) seems to leave a little something to be desired, u don't want to make something that comes up a little short even shorter.

""""""stopped on a small hill facing uphill and the temp gauge jumped from 210 to red. The instant I turned around and faced downhill at a stop, it dropped back to 210 or less.""""
THINK!
Even if you took the fan and radiator, the pump and all the water and threw it down the hill it wouldn't instantly get hot. Facing it down the hill would not instantly cool it down either.
Diversion from the real problem - again!
His next dumb statement will be to wax the fenders!
DUH!

haha rrich you crack me up
ok so I convinced everyone involved to go back stock! clutch fan and e fan. Now there's a new problem! The mechanic pulled a fan from a 97 and now it doesn't clear the compressor. I found a spacer from autozone but the spacer is too large. He says he found a clutch with a longer shaft that will fit. any input?

What year is your XJ?
What doesn't clear the compressor? The fan blades, or does he mean the clutch itself?
Is it that he can't get it in to it's mounting spot, because with the shroud pulled
the whole unit should slide right in. No spacers.
If he can't put a stock mechanical clutch fan in to your rig, you may consider that he doesn't know what he's actually doing.
Also, it sounds like your are pulling parts from a JY right? Putting a used clutch fan in is a waste of time. They don't last long anyways, and a new one is only 40 bucks.
Putting in a used fan clutch is like reusing an old band aid. I wouldn't risk it.
You may consider (for about 5 bucks more) getting a ZJ fan clutch. It pulls twice as much air and fits the cherokee perfectly.
Look up ZJ fan upgrade and read.
If you go that route ONLY get one from NAPA and ONLY part 272310. DO NOT get the Max Kool or HD one as it will not fit, and no v8 version either , if the parts guy asks it's from a 4.0 93-98 Grand Cherokee.
ONLY part 272310 and ONLY from NAPA.
I could have read your problem wrong though.
Please clarify what part won't clear and how.
And what "shaft" is he speaking of???????

The fan blades don't clear the compressor.
He can get it in but the blades hit.
I don't know anything about parts from a jy or what points to me pulling parts from it. The clutch is my jeeps OEM clutch.

Can't under stand why the stock OE fan blades (bolted to a stock OE fan clutch) don't clear the a/c compressor???????? Seems whacked to me.
Here's a pic of a HD fan clutch (left) from a Chevy police V8 compared to the stock OE XJ fan clutch. Using the HD clutch (experiment), it cleared both the radiator and compressor just fine. Only problem was the constant roar.......promptly took the HD clutch off and re-installed the OE fan clutch.

I havent had a chance to look at it directly myslef and have him physically show me the issue. I work 5 am to 7 pm. It doesn't make sense to me either. I'll have to look into the engine compartment myself.

Ok. It's as simple as it sounds which is hard to believe! Stock set up: the fan blade hits the AC compressor and another pulley. With a 1 inch spacer it hits the top bracket of the radiator. Anything less than 1 inch it barely clears the pulley and compressor but hits a cooling line. It is a head ache!

U keep saying stock or stock set-up?????.....your XJ was stock when it left the factory, the stock fan mounted to a stock fan clutch didn't hit, rub, or contact anything. Sounds like it is still far from, long ways off from stock.
Need to do a lot of reading and be fairly savy at moding, if thinking about the Taurus fan install.
