I don't know anything about MSD ignition boxes or why on earth one would be needed on a Cherokee, but I'd start by looking for any wires that are obviously not factory and trace them...maybe remove one at a time

Yeah last owner took it off cause its stupid for a cherokee and the wiring from the msd box was left still hooked up to the alt and battery it looks like.so im thinking its causing some sort of short and causing battery to over charge.the meter shoots all the way up when u rev up to 2k rpms.

So it seems that its the voltage regulator.its purpose is to limit the voltage from overloading which it isnt doing. Causing the over charge.the wiring that looks a mess was what seems to be when the previous owner had an msd switch hooked up and he had it hooked into the alt which has nothing to do with the alternator.the regulator probably went bad he never fixed it and sold the jeep. The end. Ill get a new alt.the wiring also seems to be fine I just have to wire it correctly all the wires are factory they were untapped and the dude fed into them which is why look the way they do.
