I've done it both ways. As stated before there's plenty of write ups about both.
My opinion; drop it out and give everything a good cleaning. Rugged ridge has a nice super short kit with excellent instruction. Good luck

That's what's called a hack-n-tap SYE. In the write up he's already taking it apart, so why not go with a true SYE?

Do me a favor and google adams driveshaft. They're in Utah. I ordered a new shaft with a super short SYE from them. 3 days later I had the SYE installed. Then I measured, called them up and told them what I got. Within 6 days awesome new driveshaft was at my door complete with u-joints. Fit perfect. That's Utah to PA too!

I think he just broke it apart without removing it.

When I did our first hack, we idled the jeep in drive and used a circ saw with abrasive blade to cut it down. Never did open that one up. It was a rubicon express kit. In the end cost more than Adams kit with SYE. Just different labor.

Good luck with the job. Couple things to help: long extension ( I mean long ) with swivel socket for the upper bolts. And make sure you have the right snap ring pliers.
Feel free to ask questions. Lot of guys on here have done it.
