When my cable broke I did this on my 91... If you reach up under the jeep to the drivers side you will see the master release latch..You can if you have long enough arms and small enough hands reach up there and twist that to relesase the hood..Other then that ya gotta take the head light stuff all till ya can remove the two side spring latch gizmos..

This is exactly why I lube the catches/cables and guides nearly every time I open the hood near the garage.

Default Had this problem today as well

First post on this forum...had the same issue today, went to pop the hood and out came the release in my hand. Thought it was my own brute strength but then remembered that when the wife hit a deer a few years back, damage had occurred to the latch making release more difficult. I had just weakened it over the years having to pull so hard.

To fix, I just removed the cover of the release handle under the steering column, grabbed the severed cable, used a wire striper to expose an inch of cable, grabbed with the plier, and pulled. I'll add a small vice grip to give semi - permanent access to the engine until I fix it.

The pic of the "surgical" removal of a piece of the grill to access the latch (jsny1010 link ) is unbelievable. I hope alcohol was involved....any other excuse is just scary.
