Default older rims with ??? backspacing question

Just bought some eagle alloys with ? backspacing. But they wont fit. there 5x120. so if I used them, I would need and adapter. My Q' is, can I use them? How does the whole backspacing thing work? What are my stockers backspaced to?
Keep in mind, that the adapter will be 1" thick.
Please help.

Put the wheel facedown , use a straight edge across the rim and measure down to back of the mounting surface
