older rims with 13" backspacing question

older rims with ??? backspacing question
Just bought some eagle alloys with ? backspacing. But they wont fit. 
there 5x120. so if I used them, I would need and adapter. My Q' is, can I use them? How does the whole backspacing thing work? What are my stockers backspaced to?
Keep in mind, that the adapter will be 1" thick.
Please help.
