Default Ok did all the checking on the clunking

I have 1995 auto and has been clunking after letting off the gas.
1. Checked and replaced transfer case fluid.
2. replaced rear u joints and greased yoke.
3. Took to a friends and checked motor mounts and transmishion mounts.
4. Put in N and about 1/4" play on rear drive shaft.
Here is weird part, I was in line a buger joint and idle went up and felt a clunk. Jeep was in drive with foot on break.
Could something in the idle make that happen???

Make sure the exhaust isn't banging on anything.

Is it a solid clunk you can feel through the floor or just a noise?

Could be in the transmission or torque converter.

Idle going up sounds like it kicked itself into neutral and then back into gear.

Is the transmission fluid in good shape and at proper level?

Tranny level good and fluid looks good. And you can feel it threw the floor.

If it's the torque converter a no load test may not work.

Would still rule stuff out, just make sure to block the tires very well and use solid jack stands.

Default piggy back

hate to piggy back this thread, but alot of people get mad when you start a new thread about something similar to this one or another.

96 xj, 4x4, 3" lift, 33's. Motor mounts about a year old and just installed trans mount last weekend. Out driving it today and all of a sudden it started shacking and vibrating like the wheels were coming off. I got out and checked but everything was still on and tight (I checked the rear and front drive shaft - no play and were tight). I was able to limp it home, but the closer I got to home the major vibrations went away, but still vibrated a little. A mechanic friend suggested that I check the rear drive shaft for lack of grease issues. I believe everything is OEM and has never been checked or at least I have never done it and have had it for 3 years. He suggested I uninstall and put in new u joints and grease the yoke front and rear.
Could there be a problem with the new trans mount? It was easy to do and only took about 30 minutes. Everything is snug in place with no problems.

Well if it was fine until you changed mount, I would look at that more than u joints. Get a friend put in D than R with foot on breaks and give some gas to see what the mounts are doing.

In changing the tranny mount did you pull the driveshaft and separate it? If so you may have gotton the U-joints out of time? And that's all bad.

Don't be under the Jeep while doing this.
