I have the 4.0litre with 110,00 miles on the clock with no top end noise(yet) have a slight knock that seems to come and go(doesn't speed up with engine rpm) and was wondering if I should stick with 10w30 conventional or run the 10w40 conventional oil. My main concern is since there is no vehicle produced today that calls for 10w40 oil that I am aware of would the 10w40 have the same aditives say as the 10w30 oil?

Maybe try some lucas additive with 10w30 or 40?

The noise does not speed up as rpms increase?
I wouldnt use additives just run a good oil to start with.
you can run a 5w oil if you want you will have better protection at start up. A 5-20 0r 5-30 will be alsmost the same as a 10-30 or 10-40 once it it warm. Most of your engine wear comes at startup and running thick oil just adds to it.

Take a long pry bar or screw driver and put one end on something and put your ear on the handle. you can hear good maybe you can pinpoint the location. where does it sound like its coming from?

good idea, I will get back to you tomorrow, its dark now and I have no garage, when I just kneel by the driver side front wheel well it sounds like its coming from the bottom of the engine, but I will try your trick tomorrow when its light out. its a 1996 sport, 111,000 miles on the clock.
