Default Oil temp sensor/sender on 98 4.0?

Is there an oil temp (not pressure) sensor on the '98 4.0 engines? I'm assuming not, but I wanted to verify. The search results were nebulous, as it seemed many were confusing oil temp and pressure.

While we're on the subject, I'm assuming the AW4 of the same vintage does not have a temp sender either. Correct?

if there's no oil temp gauge, I'm guessing that means a sender of same would be useless. But, I have seen that you can add a trans fluid temp gauge, for instance, with the installation of an aux cooler. Arguably, an IR thermometer would otherwise let you know the oil temp if necessary (?)

Google around. I think there's some aftermarket sensors you can use.

As for the AW4: AW4's before '98 had a port that you can put a temp sensor in. In '98 the trans housing was changed and they eliminated the port for the temp sensor. Folks with '98 + AW4's tee into the oil cooler tube going to the radiator.

If you open this link and scroll down to post #48 you'll see what I'm talking about - Ref the AW4 oil temp sensor port.

Yeah, that's why I figured I didn't have one. I suppose it's possible to drill and tap to install one there, but you'd have to pull the trans apart to get the shavings out. What I might look at doing is putting in a T fitting when I hook up an aux trans cooler at some point.

As for the oil temp sensor, where would it even me mounted to, assuming there's not a factory one?
