so i bought my first xj about a month ago and love it! its a 96 2 door high output 5 speed. it had 74,000 miles on it and rubicon express (i believe its a 3.5") with swaybar disconnect and 31x10.50 bfg kos. well to get to the point, there is oil leaking from what looks to me like electronics. in the pic its directly above the oil filter, with the cockeyed cap. it looks like it popped off, and im not sure what it is. any help is appreciated.

 

Wish I could tell you what that was but mine doesnt have it. If it looks like its popped off from somewhere the best thing to do is see if there are any hoses or openings that are missing something. How much oil is coming out? I'd go to AutoZone and pick yourself up a Haynes manual and go from there. Wish I couldve been more of a help. Good luck!

the cap is the white thing thats cockeyed, it wont go back in. it squirted a good amount out.

 

That is your oil pressure sending unit.
If it is leaking out around the wires then replace it. It's not going to break the bank.

It gets broken quite a bit when you remove the oil filter if your not watching out for it. I disconnect the wiring on mine when I change the filter.

 

X2 on that. i actually just dripped some oil on mine one time from the dip stick and didnt know it. i thought i was leaking so i kept checking the oil and kept dripping it on there, the guy at autozone pointed that out to me...alot happier now that i am not an idiot. but yea that piece is like $7. just make sure you get the one for the gauges and not the one for the idiot light
