I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee 4wd 6 cylinder and I've been having problems with my Jeep. Bought it for 3 grand with 33 in Swampers and a 6 1/2 in lift on it, had a few issues (dying alternator and a dead battery). It was sitting on base for a while after I bought it because I am/was borrowing my parents car and decided that I would take it on a 265 mile ride home for Christmas leave. It was running just fine, no backfiring and it wasn't spewing oil onto the engine. As a lot of you may know it was snowing quite a bit in the NW during Christmas so I was having fun with it while I was home until I tried to take on a snowy hill and then it lost power and started backfiring under the hood whenever I tried to accelerate. So we ended up changing out the Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, Distributor Cap, Distributor Cables, Spark Plugs, changed the oil (Mind you, we know VERY VERY little about mechanics) and we even changed out the Fuel Tank (felt this would be a good idea beings it had gas sitting in it for a long time, I know... we're dumb). So to this day I can get it up to 65 mph as opposed to during Christmas where it would max at 25. There's very little backfiring/popping under the hood but whenever I'm done taking it for a spin, I pop the hood and there's Oil on the engine which I can only guess came from the Breather. I A) don't have the money to take it to a shop and B) don't WANT to take it to the shop beings this is my baby and I want to learn to fix her. I'm looking for some helpful advice as to what to check for. So... symptoms are:

- Occasional minor backfiring/popping sound under hood when accelorating
- Oil spewing onto engine after driving
