does check gauges light up, bc it might be that the sending unit is broken/torn. Shouldn't have touched that either but you never know, it's above the oil filter about 3 inches long. Just look to see if there are cracks and such. Otherwise I dont know either

2x on checking the sending unit.
Alot of times the older plastic on XJ's only need you to look at it "funny" for it to crack.
FYI: There is no check guages lights on Pre-97 models. When Jeep updated the dash, they put that particular light in the cluster.

I just replaced the oil pump on my `97 G Cherokee due to the pressure readings on the dash. I was getting pressure readings & all when I first start her, but after a little while, the indicated pressure would drop to zero. If I cut her off & then back on, the pressure would read normal, then drop again shortly thereafter. After installing the new oil pump, I get no oil pressure readings at all now. Going to check out the sending unit now, but is there anything else it could be??

I have the exact same problem with my newly acquired Cherokee. The 88' jeep Cherokee i drive right now was my dads and i have used it allot over the years. Years ago my dads phone charger was always left in the cigarette lighter outlet, the tip is unscrew-able for an inline fuse. Well one day the charger was removed when the Jeep was running to plug something else in. The tip fell out into the outlet, and when a plastic straw was used to try and push the metal piece out , it caused a spark that could be seen and a pop was heard, The oil pressure gauge went down past zero and the radio no longer receives power as well as the cigarette lighter.
All the fuses are ok , including the oil pressure sending unit. I know the oil pressure unit is OK because a mechanic also said that was the problem and replaced it about 3 years ago. Still no go . last year another repair place agreed to attempt to fix the problem (many don't want to touch electrical issues) and said the stock radio needed to be replaced and did so with one from a salvage yard. Problem still not solved.
Because i am willing to bet that Jeep would not make electrical designs where my radio's power would cut out because the oil pressure sending unit went bad. That would just be really bad designing.
I hope you don't mind me asking about my problem in your thread too, i have tried to ask a couple times in the past and never received any advice
By the way Do you have power in your cigarette lighter outlet?
