Default Oil Pressure Sensor

While driving through the mountains yesterday my oil pressure gauge bottomed out and the check gauges light came on. I have a small oil leak, so I added a little oil, and it seemed to solve the problem for the rest of my trip. On the way home today, the gauge seemed to be working fine when I left and not long into the trip it would bottom out, then get up to 20 psi, sometimes around 40-45, but eventually just bottomed out completely. I had plenty of oil, and there was definitely oil getting to the top end of the motor. After reading up on this problem and took a leap of faith for the rest of the trip and drove all the way home praying it was just the sensor. I made it fine while showing 0 psi, and no ticking or knocking happened. Does the sensor seem like the best option to start with? I don't have the tools or place to pull the pan and check the bearings right now, so I'm assuming this is my best first option. Also, the oil does not seem to be milky at all from a cracked head or leaking coolant. Any suggestions would be great! Thank you!

The best option to start with is to check pressure with a mechanical gauge which I believe you can rent at most parts houses. Without this you are just guessing as to what your pressure really is.

Mine did the same crap. Whenever I pulled over and put it in park in an attempt to open the cap and take a peek it sprung back to life. It was the sending unit .
