I have a 96 XJ, 4.0L with 175K. It runs fine, but the oil pressure gauge is pegged high as soon as I start it up. It stays pegged to the right and never moves while driving.

I have replaced the sending unit TWICE, and it is still pegged. I also made sure the parts guy gave me the sending unit for the gauge and not the idiot light.

I only have one wire leading into the socket that fits into the sending unit (which I think there is supposed to be only one wire).

Does anyone know the resistance for the gauge, or the sending unit? I have a multimeter, but I don't know whether I am looking for a bad gauge, ground, or something else?

Does the guage respond when you do a guage test?, turn the key to the run , but do not start....all the gauges should sweap to the right then return to off all the way to the left.

 

it is only supposed to have one wire. and so far you have checked everything i would. on a 96 there is no gauge test. i would also make sure they gave you a sending unit for a one wire gauge. otherwise, you are looking a a wiring, or gauge issue.

 

1. Unplug the oil pressure sensor wire and install a variable resistor that is capable of 0-90 ohms. The gauge should read 0 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) with 1 ohm, 40 PSI with 46 ohms, 80 PSI with 87 ohms. If the gauge seems to operate normally with the variable resistor in place, replace the sensor. If not it is the wire or the printed circuit in the cluster

 

un plug the wire on sender.. do same thing ?
