Default Oil pressure gauge wrong???

Me and a buddie went wheeling last weekend and we were going through some deep holes. I noticed my oil pressure gauge was reading 80 *i guess its psi?* So i pulled over shut it down. He asked me what was wrong so i explained it to him. He had the SAME problem. As we looked around and saw nothing we started them back up both reading just above 40 for a few seconds then spike to 80. Im pretty sure its not the pump considering the jeep is running fine and it happened to him at the same time. Im assuming a sensor got wet and we have damaged it? Can someone help me understand what went wrong and how to fix it?

My Oil Pressure gauge doesn't work either, I'm assuming it's the sending unit for the gauge. I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet though...I figure I'll hear the valves tick if i lose pressure and then I'll just pull over.

My 1995 Jeep Cherokee also starts up between 50 and 60 and then spikes past 80 and will stay there until I shut it back down. As soon as it spikes is usually when the engine is finally getting warmed up. But it will never go below 40-50 pressure so I'm assuming there is not an oil pressure problem...
I just replaced my engine because of a blown head gasket on my 210k engine so I must have hooked something up wrong or damaged the sensor as well... can't think of why else it would happen. I would also like some input on this problem.

Default Mine comes and goes.

Never spikes. A new sending unit is in order for me too. It drops low at Idle then back to normal. ERRR.

it is suppose to drop at idle.... like 50psi operating/20 psi idle....

BUT sounds like a little water made is way to the sensor! just try cleaning it and throw some di-electric grease and see what happens. if not replace and be careful not to break it.

The gauge actualy skips. Not a gradual up or down.

My '99 WJ did the same thing for a year. I was not worried as I had no other signs of high oil pressure, i.e. leaks etc. I pulled the connector off the oil pressure sender and cleaned the connector with WD40. The pressure came down to around 40 PSI and stayed there ever since!
