Default Oil pressure gauge

1999 jeep Cherokee here. Before I changed the oil in the jeep the oil pressure gauge read 40 psi while driving. Now after I changed the oil the gauge idles at 48 and while driving it now reads 60!

Did you put the same weight oil, and the same filter, back into it?

did the old oil filter gasket come off with the old oil filter?
Oil pressure will increase at the gage if you have two gaskets beneath the filter and you risk a blow-out at the gaskets

How can oil pressure increase if you have double-gasketed the filter?

Oil pressure is developed at the bearings.

Also, if you double-gasket the filter, you'll know right away at startup.

Remember, pressure is resistance to flow.

High oil pressure, like high blood pressure, is not good.

I would suggest next time going back to 10W-30 and using a quality filter such as a WIX or NAPA Gold. MOPAR would also be OK.

It's also possible that you banged into the sending unit and now its not reading correctly, though they seem to read low when this happens. A 20 psi jump is kind of high for going from 10w-30 to 10w-40. Might try hooking up a mechanical gauge and see what it says before jumping to any conclusions.

I don't know if he put a Fram filter on, but if he did I've heard anecdotal evidence that one of those can cause weird pressure readings.

Whenever the owner changed just the filter to a good one, everything returned to normal.

This.

Jeep pressure gauges are like politicians.

They lie. A lot.
