Default Oil pan clearance on stock lift

I need to replace my rear seal and the gasket. I have the stock lift. I jacked it up today to check to see how much clearance there is. It is a pretty good bit. I have the weight off the axle. If this isn't enough can I disconnect the sway bar and possibly the shocks to get enough to do this.

Shop wanted $330.00 to do this. I bought the gasket and 2 seals for less than $50. I have all the tools and know I can change this as long as I can get the cover off.

Yes. Disconnect your shocks, sway bar, and track and and you should be able to get it out.

I just did this. I tried disconnecting those and still didnt have enough clearance. The lower control arms were hitting on the axle. I had to jack up the engine to get enough clearance. I also have the upcountry suspension.

I'm not sure what your saying. The lower control arms are bolted to the axle. How can they be hitting the axle? Where and how did you lift the engine to do this? I will be starting this project this weekend.

I think what he means is the control arms bottomed out and contacted the axle with the flat section of them, assuming were talking about stock control arms

Get a Haynes manual. It'll show you EXACTLY how to do this, step by step.

You should just be able to jack up the front by the body and let the axle droop. This should give you enough room to get the pan out. This is what I have to do to get mine off.

I forgot to say that by doing this, I don't have to disconnect anything.

Hey Scott, do you have a lift on your Jeep?

Default Update

I got the oil pan off the engine but it is still under the Jeep. I am having a clearance issue with the front of the pan hitting the steering stabilizer. I can't clear the bell housing because the pan won't drop down far enough. I tried to remove it from the steering linkage but it want budge. Looking on Rock Auto I see that it has a tapered shaft. I tried hitting the shaft with the nut on it loosely. I sprayed some penetrating oil on it a put a gear puller on it with some pressure. I am going to leave it over night and try again tomorrow.

Ive taken the pan off 3 different XJ's. NONE came out without raising the body high enough to remove the lower shock bolts to drop the front axle.

Again, GET A HAYNES MANUAL! Seriously, go buy one, you wouldn't be on here wasting time wondering why it wont come out.

My current '91 does have a 3" lift but my old '92 was stock and I never had to disconnect anything. Maybe I was just lucky.

The shocks are completely removed and so is the sway bar. I have the Haynes manual and the FSM.
