I've got an oil leak going on and I can't quite identify the location. The oil is running down onto the oil filter and making it's way down from there. It almost looks like it's leaking from the oil filter adapter, but I can't quite tell for sure. It's not bad, I changed the oil about a month ago and haven't had to add any yet. Is there anything common I should look for, or are there any other spots it could come from that high up? If it's the adapter, is there a gasket/ O-ring kit for it or is it just easier to replace the whole thing?

The oil also has run down the engine and I can see where it's pooling on the bottom of the bell housing, and when I shine a light up there I can only see a minute amount of fresh oil near the rear main, so if the rear main is leaking it is a very tiny amount. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just fixed this on my XJ last week. There's a thread elsewhere on this forum (https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/com...herokee-75462/) that tells how to get the filter adapter off to replace the dried-out o-ring under it....that's what's leaking. Mine leaked oil in exactly the same places you describe.

My XJ has a torx-bolt holding the oil filter adapter in place, yours probably has a hex bolt. If there's a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer near you, stop by and pay the whopping sum of $4.10 for the 3 o-ring set, part number 4720363, and replace them.

Awesome! I like when it's an easy (read cheap!) answer and fix! Thanks a lot!
