Could be the front main seal behind the balancer/crank pulley.

If it's only a slight leak, you should be happy! I almost have more oil on the outside of my engine than i do IN my engine! But Front seal is probably the answer...

Actually i think the oil/grime on the outside of the motor is what's holding it together!

Well you have to pull the balancer off. As it's right behind it. Be sure to check it out good because you have it off should just replace it as they do go bad. Once balancer is off it's an easy change. I got mine in a kit at orielly for $11.

You're positive that it's not coming from the valve cover and leaking down the front of the engine?

It is just a little involved. Rad, comes out, serpentine belt. You need a puller for the damper pulley, (no big deal). Then the seal. You will want a manual. (or now my library will let me access and print online with my card#. I prefer to have it in-hand).

If you're not a "mechanic" , this job and the tools you will need will be a good start. Just clean it really well then get straight in there with good light and make sure it's the seal first!

Won't the damper pulley seal sling oil from the back of the pulley?

I wouldn't get too concerned about it unless it is really slinging oil. Like a cup a day or so.

Well, like pointed out it may not be that big a deal. I used to carry a diaper I could put under there if I was working somewhere with a nice driveway. I'd drive of and forget it 1/2 the time though!

I think you might want a book or some literature. You might find the timing cover seal at rockauto.com. It fits in to the cover and seals to the harmonic balancer (crank pulley).

Or your local auto parts will have it. I would use the old oil for my chainsaw bar.
