Default Oil Gauge Drops when idle, normal when running, Cherokee started running rough

Hello, I'm new to the forums but wanted to ping you guys to see what my problem might be. I just picked up a 2001 Jeep Cherokee. There was no maintenance history with the Jeep and yesterday the oil gauge started dropping when i would idle and resume to the normal position when driving. I've heard of this happening but then just as I pulled into my driveway, the Jeep started running rough and the engine seemed really...really hot when I popped the hood. I can do basic maintenance but I have a feeling this may be over my head. Any help on what this may be? Thanks in advance for all your help.

How low did it drop?

Lower Oil pressure at hot idle is normal. Have you checked the oil level?

It finally dropped all the way to 0 when I was pulling into the driveway and it has oil in it after I let it sit for a couple minutes. I went to start it back up and the oil gauge stayed at 0. Thanks for the quick reply.

It's probably not the gauge. Having towed with a flatbed to a place that can properly diagnose the problem.

I wouldn't start it again till you find out what's really going on.

Similar issue on mine too, i took it to a mechanic and he said the pressure isn't too low. I changed my oil pan gasket recently but stupidly didn't clean out the oil screen on the oil pump while I was in there. But my suggestion is that it's always worth having a mechanic diagnose whatever is wrong. I've saved myself headaches this way. Just my cents.

" i took it to a mechanic and he said the pressure isn't too low."

I would say 0 pressure is too low.
