So I was driving up the highway today and looked down and noticed my oil pressure was only about 10PSI at 65MPH. Then I noticed a cloud of smoke behind me. I slowed down and stayed in the slow lane in case things went Titanic on me. Once I got off the highway and came to a traffic light my psi dropped to 0. When I got home I noticed a sizeable puddle of pil forming on the ground right over below where my oil filter etc would be and shut the Jeep down. Turned out there was oil coming out the back of the plug which goes into the oil pressure sending unit.
Appearently the oil was going completely thru the sending unit and then thru the plug and pushed the back of that out from the pressure. Not having a new sending unit handy I simply threaded the correct sized bolt in it to block the oil flow until I can get to the junkyard tomorrow and get a new one. Aside from the fact I won't know my oil pressure all day tomorrow is it ok to drive it with that just plugged off? Thanks

Be careful. I'm surprised you found a bolt that fit the sending unit thread. I would have thought the sending unit is a pipe thread. I agree with buying a new sending unit. They aren't expensive.

I buy the oil pressure sending unit directly from Jeep. Worth the extra $20. I personally have had mixed (poor) luck with certain aftermarket sending units. Quite a number of threads with others having flaky sensors of this type as well.
